Look closely at these petals and you'll see it's actually a tiny purple checkerboard. This flower has been popping up in our yard every spring and I finally found out what it's called: fritillaria meleagris.
Tulips and azaleas in our front garden beds, the time of year when our yard briefly looks really pretty before it turns all brown and crunchy. This is a strategic photo angle which makes the flowers look fuller than they actually are.
