We are strangely obsessed with presidents, so it was such a thrill to visit Mount Vernon, George Washington's home. (Monticello is a bit further out — next time!)
Dining room at Mount Vernon, channeling Vermeer vibes.
The boys were tickled to meet "Martha Washington," they kept asking me if she was real. Lady Washington told us she made her kids practice their instruments 4 hours a day!
One of the many guest rooms at Mount Vernon. The décor makes my skin crawl, though. George Washington was plagued with a steady stream of guests — one year, he recorded more than 600!
I really wish we had gone to colonial Williamsburg, but it was just a bit too far. After studying colonial life in social studies, it was so cool to watch an actual blacksmith at work. It's hard for kids to grasp concepts like "coopers" and "slave quarters" until you actually see it firsthand.
George Washington was a president and general, but he considered himself a farmer first.
LOVED the audio guides. Really nicely done, easy for kids to use.
