Valley Forge

Going out as a family gets expensive really fast — but not at Valley Forge! Free admission, free parking, beautifully maintained grounds. LOVE the National Park Service.

Valley Forge became the 4th largest "city" in the colonies when George Washington and his 12,000 troops made their winter camp here in 1777.

General Washington's headquarters in Valley Forge. He paid the owner rent, instead of seizing it like British would have. 25 people crowded into this 3-bedroom home, including a baby!
Memorial Arch dedicated to the Constitutional Army.
Detail of a stone face on the Memorial Arch. It doesn't look too happy.
The kitchen in Washington's headquarters is separated from the main house. No sink, no dishwasher, no stovetop, no oven.
We played with Lincoln logs in the visitor's center, then saw actual log huts on the grounds. These particular huts were used by General Washington's lifeguards, aka the Secret Service.
The Washington Memorial Chapel is a working church today! So pretty.
