On picking names

We were chatting at the playground, and I mentioned my boys' names: Joseph and Paul. "Oh, the apostles!" one mom said. "Biblical," said another. Religion had nothing to do with their names, I promise. My criteria for choosing names:
  1. Has to sound good in Chinese. I knew a little boy named "Aaron," and his Chinese parents called him "A-lun." I can't listen to a lifetime of accent-butchered names, so no r's, th's, etc. allowed. "Joe" and "Paul" are both easy to pronounce in Chinese.
  2. When your last name is Grygiel, you have to go with something fairly straightforward. Otherwise you wind up with a name like JiaYing Grygiel. 😉
