I hadn’t been to the Burke in a while, and I’d forgotten how they go out of their way to make kids feel welcome there. I was impressed.

We went to see “We Are Puget Sound,” a small but nifty exhibit on the second floor. The photography is beautiful, but it really helps if you can read.

The exhibit has a few nice interactive touches: Make a pencil rubbing of an orca. Listen to the different calls from J pod, K pod and L pod. Write your own pledge and hang it up.

The Burke has play areas on the second and third floors, with blocks, camouflage dress-up, an orca to climb on. My kids’ favorite part of the museum was the husky scavenger hunt with a prize at the end. Don’t miss out on the fry bread at Off the Rez!

The biggest exhibit, of course, are the humans. Researchers here work behind  glass windows, and you can watch them working.
